Claremont Road was a street in Leyton East London. That was sealed off & barricaded because it lay in the path of the M11 link road. A four mile stretch of motorway. The ideas behind it was to make the inevitable eviction as difficult , lengthy and as expensive as possible. Whilst the original tenants , squatters , artists & environmental protesters built & decorated spectacular defences & obstacles. They also attracted a great deal of media attention. Society of the Spectacle indeed. With regular actions on the surrounding road building site the D.O.T. had to spend millions on security. This campaign spurred many other protest sites to spring up all over the U.K. Eventually reversing the vast majority of the Governments road building plans.
